Auditions
Kelsey Players has auditions for “’Twas the Night Before Christmas” on Sunday, November 1, from 1 to 4 p.m.; and Monday, November 2, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. The auditions will be in the Communications Building just behind the Kelsey Theater.
Prepare a short monologue or Christmas poem, a short song with sheet music (Christmas carols preferred), and be prepared to dance. Bring a resume, photo, and list of all conflicts. Casting for ages 7 and older includes roles for Clement Moore’s daughters, adult and children townspeople, narrators, and dancers. Hair Cuttery salons host an opportunity for clients to give back to area service men and women with a simple haircut through its Share-A-Haircut program. For every adult who purchases a haircut on Wednesday, November 11, a haircut certificate will be donated to a veteran in that same community, honoring those who have sacrificed so much for our country. Cotsen Children’s Library presents First Draft, a free writing resource for young writers to receive constructive feedback. Submit your creative writing and personal essays via M-mail, and Princeton University student editors will offer their comments and suggestions. Program runs through April for ages 13 to 17. For Young Artists
Middlesex County Improvement Authority is looking for the next great young artist to pep up the cover of its 2016 online recycling brochure. The art contest is open to all Middlesex County youth, fifth grade and younger, who are interested in sharing their talents with the region.
The online brochure is a compilation of curbside pick-up schedules, yard-waste program details, as well as the specifics on a diverse number of County-sponsored recycling initiatives. This guide is made available to the 90,000 participating homes and businesses in the County.
A range of art mediums will be accepted, from paintings to sketches using crayons, pens, pencils, and oil pastels. All submissions must be received by the MCIA by Sunday, November 1.
Each entry should contain a teacher, parent or guardian’s name, along with their contact information, such as a phone number or address, as well as the name of the child artist. A selection committee will narrow down the submissions and announce a winner on the MCIA’s website no later than Friday, November 6.

Call for Art
D&R Greenway Land Trust seeks art for “Earth/Fire,” a juried exhibit that will feature artistic interpretations of earth and fire to recognize such essential elements to nature and to our lives. Grounds For Sculpture seeks photographs for “Focus on Sculpture,” a juried exhibition of amateur photographs all sharing sculpture as subject matter. The primary requirement is that the images depict sculpture or present the subject in a sculptural manner. Images must have been created within the last two years. Must be 18 or older. Garden State Film Festival is accepting films in documentary, animated, narratives all short and feature lengths, as well as music videos, commercials, trailers and student projects for submission. Visit www.gsff.org for guidelines. Deadline is Sunday, November 15.
Call for Plays
Playwrights Theater is accepting submissions for the 33rd annual New Jersey Young Playwrights contest and festival. Plays are accepted in the following divisions: Elementary (grades 4 to 6), Junior High (grades 7 to 9), High School (grades 10 to 12), and Living with Disabilities (grades 6 to 12). Submit at www.njypf.org. The entry deadline for all divisions is 11:59 p.m. on Friday, December 18.
Bereavement Group
St. David’s Episcopal Church in Cranbury will host a Bereavement Support Group on Tuesdays, October 20 to November 24, 2 to 3:30 p.m. The grief support group will be inclusive of all types of losses, such as death, divorce, bankruptcy, loss of a job, etc. The goals of the group are to provide a safe place for expressions of grief, opportunities for education about loss, emotional support, and the exploring of coping and adaptive strategies. Friends of the West Windsor Library seeks volunteers to help sort the donated books throughout the year. There are many opportunities to get involved and sorting schedules are flexible.
