Nike’s Rebuilding New Orleans Two Feet at a Time is a project in which Nike regrinds any brand of old athletic shoes and uses the grind to rebuild sport surfaces. Nike has committed to rebuild five basketball courts in New Orleans. Collection bins are located in Princeton schools as well as West Windsor-Plainsboro North and South high schools. No metal, cleats, or spikes. No shoes in plastic bags or tied together. Alex Bozich, a Princeton High School senior, is organizing the project. He has already collected more than 900 shoes. The Gallery at Mercer County College invites photographers who live, work, or attend school in Mercer County, to submit entries for the 2007 Mercer County Juried Photography Exhibit, which will be held from November 22 to December 22. Jurying for the show will take place Sunday, November 18, at the gallery. Photographers may submit up to three works for consideration. Drop off, judging, and pick-up take place on November 18. Scholarship recipients receive awards of $300 to $1,”000 based on an essay of 550 words or less describing their academic or career goals. Must be postmarked by Tuesday, January 15.

Wal-Mart Foundation offers Sam Walton community scholarships to graduating seniors in the amount of $1,”000. Winners, selected on financial need, academic record, and school and community involvement, will be announced in April. Jersey Girl Study focusing on pre-teen girls in relation to breast cancer development is underway by a Cancer Institute of New Jersey Researcher look at environmental, hormonal, and nutritional factors. VSA Arts of New Jersey, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting the creative power of people with disabilities, is accepting applications for the 2008 arts achievement awards. Classified students, ages 14 to 21, who show outstanding achievement in and commitment to an art form, are eligible for the student arts excellence awards. The education in the arts awards are presented to outstanding educators and administrators for establishing high quality arts programs for classified students. March of Dimes invites everyone to share their baby’s unique story during “Prematurity Awareness Month” at www.marchofdimes.com/everybaby. The interactive website allows families and friends to connect through activities across the country. Families are also asked to host “Parties for Babies” as small or large get-togethers including dinner parties, cocktail parties, movie nights, or brunch. Each attendee is asked to make a donation.

New Support Group

Middlesex County Public Health Department offers a free support group for adult survivors of sexual assault. The sessions begin on Tuesday, November 13, from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Rape Crisis Intervention Center in Edison. Sessions continue on a bi-weekly basis through April 15.
