As budget season fast approaches, Greg Mayers will certainly have his hands full as he gets acquainted with Plainsboro’s finances.
Mayers, 35, who took over as Plainsboro’s Chief Financial Officer on February 9, says he can already tell, though, that he should have no problem diving right into his new responsibilities.
Despite the faltering economy, “Plainsboro has been thriving, and I think it will continue to do so,” Mayers said. “It seems stable and like it has a lot going for it.”
Mayers, who grew up in Linden, graduated with a degree in accounting from Kean College (now University) in 1995. His father was a letter carrier, and his mother was a bookkeeper. Both are now retired and continue to reside in Linden. Mayers currently lives in Spotswood.
A certified public accountant, a certified municipal finance officer, and a certified tax collector, Mayers performed municipal auditing since 1995, and has worked with several governmental entities for the past four years. For the past three years, he worked as the chief financial officer for the city of Asbury Park.
Mayers replaces former chief financial officer Wendy Wulstein, who resigned in October. Since that time, Plainsboro has employed the services of consultants to help Township Administrator Robert Sheehan with the township’s finances until a new chief financial officer could be found.
Mayers says most of the work he has encountered so far centered on the upcoming municipal budget. “It’s that time of year, and we’re getting the final issues closed out for 2008,” he said. “I haven’t been here that long, but it seems like it’s coming along pretty well. Just looking back in 2008, it seems they are very fiscally responsible, which is good to see.”
