Robbinsville Township Recreation Department offers summer art program for adults
Looking for something new this summer?
For the first time, the Robbinsville Township Recreation Department has adapted its children’s art program for adults. Aimed at artists of all levels, the Palette Up! art program is scheduled to run for six classes, starting June 25, at the Robbins House. Participants can socialize with friends and enjoy refreshments while using acrylic paints to create their own nature-themed masterpiece.
The adult classes will be two hours long, running from 7-9 p.m. on July 10 and 15, Aug. 1, 13 and 18. Professional canvases and all supplies will be included in the class fee of $30, which can be paid on a class-by-class basis. There is no need to commit to all—or even two—sessions, but participants must register online before attending any class.
As of June 19, the first session had a handful of people pre-registered, but township recreation director Joe Barker said he believes there’s allure to this type of program.
“There is less of a demand for a program like this once students are 12-plus, but we think that adults might appreciate the opportunity to enjoy a chance to express themselves creatively after a busy day at work,” Barker said.
Barker said he introduced art classes into the scope of rec department activities three years ago, working along with KidzArt owner Cheryl Ziliani to offer kids an opportunity for involvement in activities other than sports.
“I wanted to start up an art class for kids who wanted something else to do on a Saturday morning,” Barker said. “The rec department offers an abundance of sports programs, but there seemed to be something lacking.”
At first, Barker had his doubts about the success of the program, which launched right around the time the baseball and soccer seasons were starting up. Now, though, the program is steady, with approximately 15 children attending Saturday classes. Enrollment is open, just like the adult program, so students may choose to attend every session or a few that fit into their schedules.
Ziliani, the owner of a KidzArt franchise in Mercer County since 2007, said the adult classes are a wonderful opportunity for people of all skill levels to enjoy painting like they never have before, and encouraged people to sign up with their friends. The social atmosphere makes these classes a great alternative to the usual dinner and movie, she said.
“If you are looking for something new to do, try a class,” Ziliani said. “Even if you don’t think of yourself as an artist, by the end of class you will be impressed with your own work, and you will have had a blast.”
Using a simple drawing method, certified instructors will guide students as they create original works of art.
Ziliani has experience working with adults in corporate sponsored, professional team-building workshops, most recently held at Mercer County Community College, but emphasizes that the rec department classes are intended to be a fun and relaxing social activity.
“The adults classes are always an incredible success. The best part for me is watching an adult who didn’t think they possessed artistic ability produce a piece they are proud of,” the instructor said.
