D&R Greenway Land Trust is set to hold its annual Fall Native Plant Sale in September.
The sale is scheduled for 3 to 6 p.m. Sept. 12 and 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Sept. 13 at D&R Greenway’s Native Plant Nursery, 1 Preservation Place, Princeton.
D&R Greenway’s Native Plant Nursery is a community resource for central New Jersey’s native plants that contribute to a healthy, biodiverse ecosystem.
Native plants are adapted to their region’s conditions, making them more drought-resistant than most exotic plants.
Natives also provide essential food and cover from winter conditions, having evolved alongside the wild creatures. The food provided by native plants is vital especially in autumn, when wildlife are busy storing calories either for hibernation or migration.
Examples of plants the provide food and shelter are the black berries of silky dogwood and pollen from New England aster’s bright purple blooms. Both plants are available at D&R Greenway’s nursery.
D&R Greenway’s plants are grown from genetically local seeds gathered on their preserves and tended in the nursery by staff and skilled volunteers. Native plants grown from commercially sourced plugs will also be available for purchase.
D&R Greenway plants are available in quart and gallon-sized pots, priced from $5 to $12. A full catalog is available online.
D&R Greenway’s Native Plant Nursery is also scheduled to be open 3 to 6 p.m. on the first four Fridays in October.
