Minjeh Lee, an eighth grade student at Grover Middle School, took the top award in the Eastern Division in the Music Teachers National Association Junior Woodwind Competition. The competition was held at Penn State University on January 12. A clarinet player, he will travel to Denver, Colorado, in March to compete as a national finalist. Lee, the son of Sang and Seong Dan Lee, will compete on Saturday, March 29, during the organization’s national conference. The winner receives a cash prize and performs in a special concert during the conference.
Lee, a student of Kenneth Ellison, has been studying the clarinet for more than five years. He also plays the alto sax in the school jazz band. Lee, who has been playing alto sax since fifth grade, was introduced to the instrument by his first clarinet teacher, Marcia Frost in Bergen County, and continued his lessons with Steve Rozek in West Windsor. A student in the Young Artist Program at Westminster Conservatory of Music, Lee also plays keyboards and drums.
