David Kim, the Philadelphia Orchestra concertmaster and one of the top violinists in the country, will present a master class to six string players from the Youth Orchestra of Central Jersey at High School North in Plainsboro on Tuesday, March 15, at 7 p.m. Admission is free.
The violin and viola musicians qualified for the master class through audition. Kim will provide instruction as the violinists, along with the YOCJ Percussion Ensemble, take turns performing under the eyes of their fellow students and audience members.
The musicians include:
Lakshay Patel, an eighth grade student at Community Middle School, will play Violin Concerto No. 2 in G Major by Joseph Haydn. Patel began playing the violin when he was in fourth grade and has participated in the YOCJ Pro Arte Orchestra since 2014.
Gabrielle Lee, a sophomore at High School North, will play Violin Concerto No. 4 in D Major by Mozart. Lee began playing the violin at age six.
Timothy Feng, a junior at High School South, will play Violin Concerto in E Minor by Felix Mendelssohn. Feng began playing at the age of nine.
Ji Won Lee, a junior at High School North, will play Romanze for Viola and Piano, Op. 85 by Max Bruch. Lee began playing the viola when she was seven.
Caleb Solidum, a fifth grade student at St. Ann’s School in Lawrenceville, will play La Folia by Arcagello Corelli. He began playing the violin at the age of five and joined YOCJ in September, 2015.
The YOCJ Percussion Ensemble, under the direction of Peter Saleh, will play Bach’s Violin Partita No. 1 in B Minor. The members of the ensemble are Steven Chien, David Feinberg, Adrienne Wang, and Daniel Joseph.
YOCJ is composed of more than 200 student players who seek to improve and play at a higher level. Players must be privately taught, and must continue to work with their school orchestras. Players can join through audition. The next audition is Tuesday, June 7. Visit yocj.org for information.
