Plainsboro moved closer to seeing the “long overdue” reconstruction of Mapleton Road come to fruition. The Township Committee has approved an ordinance that sets up the funding and bidding process for project.
The estimated $3.6 million project will include the reconstruction of Mapleton Road from Seminary Drive past the Delaware and Raritan Canal Park as well as drainage improvements. They include the installation of roadside water quality swales, cross culverts, and other drainage-related improvements. It will also include landscaping.
“That is the first road in the town to flood during storms, so we will hopefully solve those problems,” said Township Administrator Robert Sheehan. “The road is not in good shape.”
Middlesex County will fund the entire cost. As a result, “we took over jurisdiction of the road for that project,” said Sheehan.
However, the process has been complicated. “We have had challenges in getting approvals from the D&R Canal Commission and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection,” said Sheehan. “We think we are at the end of that process, and we are preparing the dollars to implement that project. We hope to have it out to bid in the next couple of months.”
The ordinance appropriates $4.045 million from the county to provide for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the road.
