Legion Season Ends

It was close, but not close enough for the WW-P American Legion team, which missed a chance to head on to the state tournament, with a loss to Ewing, 9-3, on July 19. A win would have given the team the sixth and final spot in the tournament, a standing the team has been battling for in the past couple of weeks.##M:[more]##

Still, its final 12-11 record and the fact that the team remained 8-0 against teams ranked under WW-P in the standings are positive accomplishments this season, says manager Don Hutchinson. He also points to wins over the top two teams in the league — Hamilton and Bordentown — as highlights of the season.

“We had a pretty young team, so we didn’t really know what quite to expect,” he said. “I felt we were competitive in just about every game.”

He said he feels the team will be better next year, with every player but one returning.

He said the Legion season was a boost for his players from High School South, where he is also the boys’ baseball coach. The Pirates ended with a 5-18 record.
