The Princeton Area Junior Woman’s Club is forming a Juniorette group this fall for teenage girls. The PAJWC, a service organization that has helped the community for more than 30 years, is affiliated with the General Federation of Woman’s Clubs, one of the world’s largest and oldest women’s volunteer service organizations. GFWC members support the arts, preserve natural resources, promote education, encourage healthy lifestyles, stress civic involvement, and work toward world peace and understanding.##M:[more]##

“We are excited to offer this program of service and community to all girls in the West Windsor area aged 12 to 18,” says Kathy Lane, the group’s advisor. Parents and interested students are encouraged to attend a kick-off pizza party at Capuano’s, 217 Clarksville Road, on Friday, September 28, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served. Members of the club, as well as state board members, will be on hand to answer questions.

“The girls are looking for a way to help the community as well as learn a little about starting such a club, making by-laws, creating a logo, and selecting service projects,” says Lane. “They will have the chance to make new friends in this club as well as in other clubs throughout the state. They can also use the volunteer hours they spend with the Juniorettes for applications for colleges, scholarships, and high school Honor Society.”

Currently there are six girls interested in joining. The process will go from the informational meeting on September 28 to a general meeting, nominations, and an installation ceremony in November.

Lane, also the adult group’s webmaster and membership chair, has lived in West Windsor since 1996. She and her husband, Flint, moved to West Windsor from Yorktown Heights, New York, when their daughter Amanda, was three months old. Amanda is now a sixth grade student at Grover Middle School. Their other daughter, Kacy, is a fourth grader at Village School, and their son, Tyler, is in kindergarten at Dutch Neck School.

Kathy and Flint met when they were students at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. She is from Troy, New York, and he is from Shoreham. His degree is in computer science; hers is in electrical engineering. When they lived in Yorktown, they commuted to New York City via train. She consulted with an engineering company on telecommunications related projects.

“My earliest volunteer efforts came from college where I was in Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority at RPI, and volunteered many hours for various charities through that organization,” she says.

Flint founded Paytrust, a company to process, print, stuff, and mail bills to take the hassle away from corporations. He is now with Billtrust, a company he started six years ago and which was recenlty named to the Inc. 5000 list of fast-growing companies. Kathy, who has put her engineering skills away while she works volunteer jobs, is a stay-at-home mom doing PTA work, YWCA Princeton volunteering, and Princeton Area Junior Woman’s Club tasks.

The PAJWC is also looking for new members. October is new member month and the next meeting will be held at the West Windsor Library on Thursday, October 11, at 7 p.m. Potential members are encouraged to attend that meeting for more information.

“Since moving to West Windsor I have continued to strive to give back to the community in many ways and find it quite rewarding as it successfully keeps me busy when the kids are in school,” she says. “I first joined the women’s club in 2000 as a way to meet new people and help the community. I have made some terrific friendships and have participated in a variety of fundraising and community service events. — Lynn Miller
