Veritas String Chamber Ensemble presents a benefit concert for the victims of the earthquakes in Nepal on Sunday, June 14, at 7 p.m. in East Brunswick. The program includes Grieg’s Holberg Suite in its entirety and Vivaldi’s Spring and Summer from the Four Seasons. Free will donations are appreciated. E-mail goodcello@gmail.com for information.
Ethan Liaw, a junior at High School North, is co-president of the group. A resident of Plainsboro, he began studying the cello when he was in the fourth grade with Suzanne Dicker of West Windsor. He currently studies with Mira Kang. He is in the Philharmonic Orchestra at High School North, and is also the principal cellist of the Bravura Youth Orchestra. He also plays the piano and teaches Chinese yo-yos at the Tzu Chi Academy, a Chinese school in Edison.
The ensemble, founded in 2014 under the leadership of Mira Kang, often reaches out to the community, and has performed in fundraising events for charities such as Global Children’s Funds and the Connection, an organization which provides mentoring for emotionally vulnerable children. The ensemble held a successful concert in 2014 to help the students and families in South Korea who were affected by the Sewol Ferry tragedy.
The ensemble includes talented young musicians from Scotch Plains, Homdel, Colts Neck, Edison, East Brunswick, and Plainsboro. Many of these teens attend Juilliard and Rutgers pre-college programs and have held principal and assistant principal positions in the NJ All-State, All Eastern, and All National Orchestras.
