Familiar Places,” an exhibit featuring watercolors of Plainsboro, Cranbury, and West Windsor, painted by former Plainsboro resident Daniel P. Turner Thomas, opens Monday, June 1, at Plainsboro Library. An art chat is scheduled for Sunday, June 21, from 3 to 5 p.m.##M:[more]##
Thomas, who now lives in East Windsor, has three children: Charlotte, a student at High School North; Amanda, studying at Gettysburg College; and Robert at Susquehanna University. The older children are also North alumni.
“As summer approaches, and thoughts turn to being down the shore, Thomas brings a beautiful array of shore inspired paintings to the gallery,” says Jinny Baeckler, director of Plainsboro Public Library. “A visit to the show of watercolors promises to transport viewers directly to the soft waves and fresh air of the shore.” The exhibit also includes paintings of area sites such as Gil and Bert’s ice cream place in Cranbury.
Thomas, a self-taught artist who focuses on landscapes in watercolor and conte crayon, became interested in art when he was eight-years old, drawing and painting for his school’s ornithological society. Since his father was chaplain to the Queen, he gained access to the grounds of the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst, where he sketched and painted. He also spent time in Berlin where he used pen and ink to capture the architecture of the city.
He moved to the U.S. in 1993 from London, and has run Chameleon Marketing, his own marketing communications agency, for a dozen years. Harkening back to his roots, the artist’s works reflect his love of the Welsh landscape where he was born, coastal scenes, birds, and the countryside around his home.
The show will also display his painting capturing the “Miracle on the Hudson.” The work, commemorating the extraordinary water landing earlier this year, will be donated to the crew of Flight 1549 in the fall. Other paintings include renditions of the fall harvest of pumpkins at Stults Farm in Plainsboro, Terhune Orchards in Lawrenceville, and Hamilton Jeweler and Lake Carnegie in Princeton.
Thomas also has shows scheduled at the Gourgaud Gallery, 1 Schoolhouse Lane, Cranbury, from July 1 to 31; and West Windsor Library, from October 1 to 31. Visit www.danielpturnerthomas.com for information.
