After losing eight seniors to graduation including Yun-Ah Park and powerhouse Colby Hussong, the High School South field hockey team had a lot of ground to cover at the beginning of the season. The squad seems to be managing just fine. At 4-2, the girls are winning games they’re supposed to win and staying in the game when it comes to their tougher matchups.
The return of seniors Rachael Salerno, Kate McCormick, Sam McCormick, Sarah Klieger, and goalkeeper Jess Kaganskiy has certainly helped. Junior Taylor Cohen has stepped up, sitting at second on the team in goals scored, and freshman Keely Lyons has been a welcome addition to the defense. Kaganskiy is, as always, solid in the net, surrendering only eight goals this season and stopping 30 shots.
North’s season, though, got off to a different start. The majority of its team returned this year, including three-year varsity starters Olivia Harpel, Julianna Haase, and Giovanna Bonafede. There is only one sophomore, Sara Gostomski, on the entire 17-player roster. The rest are juniors and seniors, so this squad comes with experience. Haase currently leads the team in goals scored, and junior Christina Hayduchok, who was the starting goaltender last year as a sophomore, has made 55 saves so far this season.
The Knights are 2-3, but every game has been close. Two of their losses came by one goal, and the third was a 4-0 defeat to undefeated Moorestown.
South edged North, 3-2 in overtime, on Friday, September 20 at North. Rachael Salerno scored twice for the Pirates, while Taylor Cohen scored once. Sarah Moxham and Sam McCormick each picked up an assist. Jess Kaganskiy blocked six shots.
For the Knights, Julianna Haase and Miranda Zhou scored one goal a piece. Kylie Mulhall and Leah Yourstone assisted. Christina Hayduchok made 15 saves.
