When she was a member of the High School South basketball team, Rebecca Peters achieved the distinction of scoring more than 1,000 points and has her name recorded on the 1000 Point Club Banner. Now a junior at Fordham University and a member of the women’s basketball team, she is again close to reaching the 1,000 point milestone.

Peters, who graduated from South in 2008, is a guest panelist for the program “Leveling the Playing Field in Sports and Academics: Building Success for the Future,” to be presented by the WW-P African-American Parent Support Group Athletic and Sports Initiatives and Programs Committee on Saturday, April 2, at High School South.

The program will include a panel discussion and dialogue with players, coaches, parents, and others on the importance of providing opportunities in athletic programs and sports initiatives as part of the full educational experience in the WW-P school district.

Panelists also include Andre Bridgette, a speed, agility, and performance trainer for multiple sports and parent of students in the district. He has trained numerous world class athletes in track and field, football, soccer, lacrosse, and field hockey. Also on the panel is Martin Flynn, who has served as the district director of athletics for the district since 1998, and has more than 20 years of teaching, coaching, and athletic administrative experience.

The program will be moderated by Cornell Edmonds, co-chair of the AAPSG Athletic and Sports Inititiatives and Programs Committee. His wife, Barbara Edmonds, is president of the organization and is delighted to have Rebecca Peters participate in the program. “Becky understands the importance of upholding the traditions and expectations, as well as making contributions that will motivate and enhance the family. Doing well in school is both a family and personal given for Becky, just as playing the same sports just like her older brothers was also a given.”

Peters was born in Manhattan and lived in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, before the family moved to Plainsboro when she was three. Her mother, Corinne Peters, is an artist who works with oil paints. Her father, Kevin Peters, is a retired guidance counselor from the New York City public school system. Rebecca’s five siblings — four brothers and one sister — all have played sports for school or recreational leagues.

Her brother James works in the IT department at a business in Princeton while studying at Drexel University. David is a student at Mercer Community College. John, a senior at High School North, is planning to attend Mercer College. Thomas, a senior at High School South, is also planning to attend Mercer College. Catherine is a sophomore at South.

Rebecca began playing basketball in elementary school for the West Windsor-Plainsboro recreational league and in seventh grade started playing for Grover Middle School.

“Being a student athlete got Becky into a great university, which is completely paying for her education, allowing her to travel to various cities, and will help her secure a great entry level position with an employer,” says Edmonds. “Being a successful student athlete tells employers that she will fit in well within their organization, and be educated successfully to be their employee.”
