Green Acres Funding Approved

Plainsboro and West Windsor may be the beneficiaries of some of an $80 million fund which has been approved by Governor Jon S. Corzine to be set aside for the state Department of Environmental Protection. The money is earmarked to help acquire and improve Green Acres lots throughout the state.

Said Corzine when he signed the bill, “In New Jersey, land preservation is outpacing development by a ratio of 3-to-1, and today’s announcement continues that impressive record.”

$1 million is meant for construction of the Delaware & Raritan Canal Greenway, which is a national recreation trail running a total of 70 miles, parts of which are in Plainsboro and Princeton.

$9 million has been set aside for areas within the Crossroads of the American Revolution. This area includes sites in West Windsor and Plainsboro in addition to Montgomery and Princeton. Sites within these townships are being evaluated for acquisition.

West Windsor may also benefit from the $8 million allocated for improvement of nature trails. The funding comes from the Garden State Green Acres Trust Fund.
