The West Windsor Police Department has been awarded a $60,”000 2008 Homeland Security grant to be used to enhance the Explosive Detection Canine Program already in effect at the department.
The money must be used to purchase an additional explosive detection dog, a vehicle, and the associated equipment and supplies, township officials said. West Windsor has one explosive detection dog named “Edy,” who was purchased using funds from a prior homeland security grant.
“The canine program provides the officers on the street a useful resource when responding to bomb scares, abandoned packages, or when officers are assigned to provide security at certain functions or locations,” West Windsor Police Chief Joe Pica said in a statement. “The dog is trained to detect the scent of explosives and therefore can search buildings and persons with relative ease.”
Edy is currently assigned to Officer Thomas Moody.
“Having one of the most heavily used train stations in the state and given development in and around the area, this additional dog and equipment will be put to good use,” said Mayor Shing-Fu Hsueh.
