Both West Windsor-Plainsboro football teams alternated bye weeks with each playing only one game during the past two weeks. For High School North it was a return to its winning ways. For South, playing its Homecoming game, it was a disappointment. ##M:[more]##
After kicking off the season with three impressive wins before being thumped by Hamilton on October 2, 27-0, the High School North football team took on the fledgling Hopewell Valley team (just in its second full season) on October 9. The Knights, who had a 23-6 lead after the first quarter, won the game, 30-14.
Big running plays were the key to the game. Senior running back Joe Mastrangelo got the scoring started with an 80-yard touchdown run on North’s first possession of the game. He later ran for a 38-yard touchdown and rushed for a total of 136 yards on six carries. The senior quarterback also ran 63 yards for a touchdown on an option play. At halftime North had already rushed for 288 yards and had a 30-6 lead. With a safe lead, North coach Art Stubbs elected to keep most of his starters on the bench during the second half.
North will play Hightstown in an away game under the lights on Friday, October 22, at 7 p.m. The Knights then play their Homecoming game on Saturday, October 30, at noon against Princeton.
High School South had a bye week on October 9, and played its homecoming game on October 16 against an undefeated Notre Dame. Widely considered as the top team in central New Jersey and ranked as high as third in the state, Notre Dame beat the Pirates, 31-0.
Still the game did have some bright spots. South’s defense held Notre Dame scoreless in the first and third quarters. South junior quarterback Brian Morris completed 5 of 11 passes and senior speedster Grant MacQueen had two receptions for a total of 40 yards.
South faces Steinert in an away game on Saturday, October 23, at 1 p.m. The Pirates play on the road again on Friday, October 29, at Lawrence at 7 p.m.
