In the 10 years since its inception the West Windsor-Plainsboro Education Foundation has given away lots of money in support of the public school system (more than $141,”700 in mini-grants and funding for nearly 200 innovative projects) and has relied on the good will of many town residents. ##M:[more]##Six volunteers who have made significant contributions will be honored at the 10th anniversary gala, “Reaching for the Stars — 10 Years of Excellence,” on Friday, September 30, from 7 to 11:30 p.m. at the Doral Forrestal, 100 College Road East in Plainsboro.
The honorees:
Lloyd George of Plainsboro, a CPA, has coached various athletic teams for his daughters, and was involved in the final stages of planning for the Middle School, including co-chairing the Business and Community Task Force for the school’s Science and Technology Center. Subsequently he served on the School Board and helped to launch the WW-P Education Foundation, serving as its first president.
Rose Miller served as assistant principal at Maurice Hawk School and principal of Wicoff School before becoming director of planning at the central office and director of the WWP Education Foundation. In 1996, after one week of retirement, she was asked to return and work as acting assistant superintendent for two more years. “How could I refuse?” she says now. “WWP was a great part of my life, and will be cherished as happy memories.”
Stephen Smith, who holds a bachelor’s and Ph.D. in experimental physics from MIT, was first elected to the Board of Education in 1997 and served either as vice president or president for five of his eight years on the board.
Smith and his wife, Roberta, have two daughters, who graduated from WW-P in 1988 and 1990.
In 1989 Lynn J. Morris and her family relocated to West Windsor, where she became active in the WW-P PTA, serving as president of the WW-P Regional PTA for an unprecedented three-year term. For the past 21 months, Lynn has served as the president of the New Jersey PTA.
Patrick and Elizabeth Boyle were both active members of the WW-P Education Foundation Board from 2001 to 2004. Pat served as vice president and was also a member of the Mini-Grant Committee. They were active members of the Gala Committee and chaired the event for two years.
They have three children in the WW-P Regional Schools and have been active in many community programs.
The gala will have a silent auction, dinner, dancing with the Billy Hill Band, and — new this year — an art & music showcase. The cost is $95 per person. Call 609-716-5014 or email gala@wwpef.org.
