D&R Greenway Land Trust, in partnership with the Land Trust Alliance and Morgan Stanley Wealth Management, hosted a seminar on successful land preservation tactics in July.
Wade Martin, senior vice president of the Martin-Rizzo Group of Morgan Stanley of Lawrenceville, D&R Greenway president and CEO led the seminar titled National Training Program on Land Preservation for Land Trusts and Financial Advisers.
Martin and Wade developed the concept of a training program for national land trusts and financial experts three years ago. The emphasis is on teaching land trusts and financial advisers to work together to accomplish land preservation in local communities.
“This new way of accomplishing land preservation can generate real results in the communities we care about and change the way land trusts achieve our goals,” Mead said in a statement. Twenty-seven land trust participants from seven states learned how to utilize financial tools available to private wealth advisers, expediting land preservation.
The seminar featured interactive presentations and workshops designed to move the entire group “outside the box” in terms of partnership and preservation possibilities.
Local attorney Lisa Butler of Pinto & Butler spoke to the group about how financial planning techniques resulted in permanent preservation and major benefits to her clients in the Princeton area. Butler presented the process by which Hopewell resident Ethel Mae Theriault preserved 40 acres of land next to D&R Greenway’s Cedar Ridge Preserve.
A more recent preservation transaction by Charles Howard and his wife of Montgomery Township illustrated how a combination of tax benefits from a bargain sale with unique financial planning benefited the couple’s family and retirement goals. The Howards’ preserved their 30-acre farm through an agricultural easement with D&R Greenway in December.
D&R Greenway Land Trust’s mission is to preserve and protect natural lands, farm lands and open spaces throughout central and southern New Jersey. Since 1989, the land trust has preserved acreage about the size of Manhattan.
