D&R Greenway Land Trust has selected award winners for its Earth/Fire art exhibition, on view at the Johnson Education Center, One Preservation Place, Princeton, through January 22, 2016. The juried exhibit explores how the elements of Earth and Fire are essential to land conservation.
First Place went to Silvere Boureau for “Forest Fire,” a painting that incorporates wood from a forest fire as its frame. Second Place went to Paul Mordetsky for “Fire Dance,” a nocturne chosen for its evocative mood and symphony of color. Third Place went to Diane Tomash for “Along the Edge,” a landscape celebration of the earth with a dreamy sky and low horizon line.
Honorable Mentions went to Ryan Lilienthal for “Campfire,” a painting that tempts a viewer to climb in and make s’mores; Jeaninne Honstein for “California Dreaming,” a study of climate change, drought, fire, wasteful use of water and the need for water; MJ Sagan for “Serotiny,” the title of which refers to the serotinous cones of a tree that need hot, fast moving fires for the cones to open and release seeds; and Byron Lum for “Sulfur Mining,” a photograph that depicts the ways in which we are able to separate and use elements in the earth.
