Lucia Spera DiPolvere of West Windsor will be presented with a humanitarian award from the Alumni Association of the College New Jersey for “her public-spiritedness and concern for human welfare through philanthropic activities” on Friday, May 2, at 7 p.m. She is a member of the Class of 1955.##M:[more]##
After earning her bachelors degree in elementary education, DiPolvere taught for eight years in the Trenton Public School system and then founded and directed the DiPolvere Nursery School for 23 years. She earned a master’s degree from College of New Jersey in 1986.
When she retired, her service to the community did not stop. “I now have more time to devote to helping others,” she says.
As a member of the Contemporary Club of Trenton for 28 years, she initiated and chaired Links for Life, a breast cancer awareness project that raised $3,”000. She has also served as chairman of social services, helping to collect clothing for the needy and items for battered women’s shelters. She has led tours of Trenton through the organization’s Four Views of Trenton program designed to highlight and promote the historical treasures of the city and raise money for charities supported by the club.
As a member of the Historical Society of West Windsor, she has participated in fund raising and has served as guide for the yearly Christmas tours to support the historical Schenck House.
A conservationist, DiPolvere is active with the Mercer County Master Gardeners, helping with plant sales, insect festivals, and the “Help Line.” She has also been active with the state, regional and national conservation districts. DiPolvere is the president of the Northeast Regional Auxiliary and vice president of the National Association of Conservation Districts’ Auxiliary. This group raises money to conduct poster and photo contests with conservation themes in schools throughout the country.
DiPolvere is also active with the Garden State Storyteller’s League, having participated in Tellebration to help raise funds for an area soup kitchen and for cancer research. She also tells stories for the West Windsor Lions Club’s Renaissance Faire and other charitable groups.
