Plainsboro Recreation and Community Services Department, along with the Plainsboro Human Relations Council present Traditions, an annual event in the town to bring the community together through the winter holiday season. The event will be held on Saturday, December 5, from 1 to 4 p.m.
There will be Old English strolling carolers, an international food and crafts festival, and a white horse drawn carriage rides with Santa. Performers from Plainsboro and West Windsor are members of the Berman Chinese School and Indian cultural groups.
“The rich cultural diversity of the township will be celebrated through foods, crafts, and dancing, culminated by the message of the puppet show which is to cultivate appreciation and solidarity during the holiday season and on,” says Leonard Cellumo, Plainsboro’s director of recreation and community services. “It is designed to be more interactive which leads to a greater appreciation and sharing of cultures.”
Young Audiences, based in Plainsboro, brings “The Town that Fought Hate,” performed by Catskill Puppet Theater. The play features original music with almost life-size puppets and shadow puppets to provide entertainment for all ages. It also gently imparts some timeless life lessons including the importance of standing up to bullies and haters and the power of community.
The production is based on Janice Cohn’s award-winning children’s book, “The Christmas Menorahs: How a Town Fought Hate.” Both the book and the play recount the true story of how people of all faiths and races came together in the town of Billings, Montana, in 1993 to successfully fight a group of haters threatening the town’s tiny Jewish population and other minorities during the Chanukah and Christmas season.
