The WW-P Education Foundation and Target are supporting a pilot arts education program entitled, “D.A.N.C.E., Dance as a Necessary Component of Education.” The funding for this project will bring into the district a five-day program that will allow students in grades four and five at Millstone River School to experience introductory movement fundamentals and explore different ways of using movement to express themselves.##M:[more]##
“I am thrilled about this program and receiving a $1,”000 grant from Target to help benefit the children in our school district,” says Marcia Smith Fleres, executive director of the WW-P Education Foundation. “Studies have shown that students who take part in the arts tend to do better academically as well as socially as it helps with creative thinking, originality, social tolerance, and self-confidence.”
D.A.N.C.E. is being conducted by Dancevision Inc., a private nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide dance educational programming and outreach for school age children in central New Jersey. The program director is Marie Alonzo Snyder, an acclaimed dancer, choreographer, dance educator, and dance scholar. She is also a West Windsor resident.
“The D.A.N.C.E. program is going to teach students about movement and dancing in general,” says Victoria Kniewel, superintendent of schools. “They will experience learning something new and fun that is not usually taught in the classroom curriculum. The program is a great way to give the children a break from the everyday textbook education and expand their minds in a creative, non-linear way.”
