It’s tournament time for the winter sports season, and the South girls’ swim team, the North basketball teams, and both hockey teams are still very much alive in various county and state events.
At South, the girls’ swim team claimed its 10th straight Mercer County title and has already defeated Jackson and Cherokee in the state tournament. In the MCT, Rebecca Lewinson won the 200 IM and 100 breast for her fourth straight year and was named the meet’s Most Valuable Swimmer for the third time.
The girls were scheduled to swim in the sectional final at North Brunswick High School on Thursday, February 18, after the News’ deadline.
North is dominating in basketball, with the North girls improving to 12-7 with a first-round win in the Mercer County Tournament over Stuart Country Day on February 16 behind the continued leadership of Jacquie Klotz, who finished the game with 19 points, and Lexi Forsell, who scored 11.
However, the coast is not clear for the girls, who will face a strong challenge away against Trenton Catholic Academy on Friday, February 19.
Meanwhile, the boys had a thrilling win over crosstown rival South, 41-40, with one minute remaining in overtime on February 16, to advance out of the first round. Eli Can hit a three-pointer to cap off the come-from-behind win.
In ice hockey, the North and South teams are still in the running in the Mercer County Tournament. South earned its first MCT semifinal berth since 2004 with its 4-2 win over Robbinsville on February 17 to avenge its loss against the same team earlier in the week. Jon Plester stopped 30 of 32 shots. South will face Princeton at 6 p.m. on Friday, February 19.
North defeated Steinert, 9-4, to move on to the semifinal round of the Mercer Tournament, where the Knights will face Princeton Day School at 4 p.m. on Friday, February 19.
