Evan Kertes and Nick Esposito are volunteering their time growing vegetables slated for distribution to people in need. Both West Windsor residents, they are eighth grade students at Grover Middle School and perform community service at St. David the King Catholic Church.
They will tend a 20-by-10-foot plot at West Windsor Community Garden (WWCG) on Everett Drive near the municipal building. They will grow peas and lettuce this spring and a variety of vegetable including tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, and more during the summer. The produce will be distributed to both seniors in need within the community and others designated by St. David the King.
The idea for the project came from Cass Cohen, a member of the WWCG. The WWCG’s mission includes giving, community service, mentoring, and teamwork. WWCG has previously worked with other groups, including a Girl Scout project to construct a composting bin.
The WWCG was established in 2009 with eight participating families. The garden has expanded to now include 30 families. Members of the garden have installed a roof water collection system for irrigation. The group also encourages organic gardening
Esposito and Kertes established their spring crop late in March and will continue to tend the plot through the fall. The WWCG will be donating funds for the young men’s plot and providing mentoring assistance in organic gardening techniques.
