WW-P teams have been cleaning up at recent tournaments. Both of South’s indoor track teams claimed the top spot at the annual Mercer County Indoor Track Meet held at the Bennett Indoor Center on January 31 — the first time a school has won both the girls’ and boys’ meets since 2003.
Track rookie Zach Rosenberg (a key member of the school’s soccer team) finished second in the 55-meter dash and the 200-dash events and third in the 400. He was also part of South’s first-place 4×400 relay team. Brian Schoepfer also had a major impact in the victory, winning the 1600 event.
Meanwhile, South’s girls finished with 102 points behind Emily Mauro, who won the 400 and was part of South’s first place 4×400 relay team. Caroline Kellner won both the 1600 and 3200 events. Mariame Fadiga took home first in the shot put, while Ingrid Simon finished second in the 800, third in the 1600, and was part of the winning 4×400 relay team. Ashleigh Delemos was also part of that relay team and finished second in the hurdles and second in the 55-meter dash.
Meanwhile, the wrestling teams at both North and South — where both have struggled to put up strong seasons in recent years — each had an individual Mercer County champion this season.
North’s Matt Persico won the 160-pound title with a 5-2 win over Lawrence, while South’s Austin Scharfstein, at 171 pounds, won the title with an 11-5 win over Allentown. For North, it is the first time a player has won a county championship since 2006; for South, it’s the first time since 2005.
Persico upset the number 1 seed, Marc Schumm of Ewing, 7-6, in the semifinals to get to the title. The achievements come on the heels of South’s first victory this season over Notre Dame on January 25.
The championships add to the South’s girls’ swim team’s first place finish at the Pirate Invitational earlier last month.
