Plainsboro Mayor Peter Cantu has announced he will seek re-election in November to the Township Committee and has received the unanimous endorsement of the Plainsboro Democratic Organization.
Cantu has served on the Township Committee for 37 years — 31 as mayor. Cantu’s seat on the Township Committee is the only one up for election this year. Under the Township Committee form of government, candidates run for terms on the committee, which then selects a mayor.
“I’m completing my 12th term on the Township Committee,” said Cantu. “It’s been a long time. People don’t do these kinds of things and stay this long unless they have passion for the community. It’s something I’ve had for a long time.”
Cantu said he hopes to continue carrying out the goals of the Master Plan. “One of the primary elements of that plan was open space, which we’ve been successful” in doing — all while balancing the housing needs of the community, he said.
He also points to the “vibrant economy” and said that Plainsboro officials are “very pleased and fortunate to say we have an economy that’s going well in these difficult times.”
“Under the leadership of Mayor Cantu and the Township Committee, Plainsboro continues to be one of the premier towns in our region,” said Democratic Organization chairman Robert Schwartz. “Just last month it was announced that the newly created Princeton Center for Arts & Education, made up of the Princeton Boychoir, the French American School of Princeton, and the Wilberforce School will relocate at the former St. Joseph’s Seminary right here in Plainsboro Township,” Schwartz said. “None of this just happens. All of it is the result of the careful planning and outstanding leadership of Mayor Cantu and the Township Committee.”
