The organizer, Cathy Clancy Kavanaugh, who lives in Pennington, is currently a stay-at-home mom to two children, Charlotte, 4, and Declan, 2. Her husband, Mark, is a CPA in New York City. After graduating from Rutgers College, she worked for close to 10 years in her father’s business, the NJ Legislative Journal, where she became the executive director.
“Some of the class went to Washington seminar in 1987 and stayed at the dorms at the 4-H club in DC. We all have great memories of that trip,” says Kavanaugh. “And the snow that fell at Mount Vernon when we were visiting made the estate look even more beautiful.” She also enjoyed a trip to New York City to see the “The Phantom of the Opera” and have lunch at Mamma Leone’s.
“The biggest celebrity around here is one of my co-committee members, Jim Barbour,” says Kavanaugh. “He is truly an American dream, success story — his barbecue sauce is now sold at Wegmans, Whole Foods, Pennington Market, McCaffreys, among many, many other places!” (The News, March 20). Another semi-celeb is Shawn Pierson, a pediatrician at Princeton Nassau Pediatrics.
“One of my favorite high school memories is from swim team, and the way that we used to take bottles of water from the ‘bubble’ to pour into the pools of our opponents when we were the away team,” says another classmate, Kristin Appelget. “The magic of ‘bubble water’ seemed to work since we won far more meets than we lost in my four years at WW-P.” (The WW-P (South) pool used to be enclosed under a bubble, hence the term “the bubble”.)

Her other brother, Christopher McQuarrie, is best known for receiving the Oscar for writing “The Usual Suspects.” With a bachelor’s degree from the University of Rhode Island and a master’s degree from Duke University in coastal geology, Meg has worked in the nonprofit sector, in scientific research, and as a community college instructor. The organization, founded on the West Coast, is now based in West Windsor (www.elixirfund.org.
