Special Olympics New Jersey welcomed three athletes back from the Special Olympics 2013 World Winter Games in the Republic Korea in February. Junichi Kusakawa, 27, of West Windsor competed in cross country skiing. He brought home gold in the 4x1K relay freestyle, bronze in the 500 meter freestyle, and a participation ribbon in the 1K divisional round.
The Special Olympics World Winter Games took place January 29 to February 5. Special Olympics Team USA comprises 152 athletes and 61 volunteer coaches and staff members from across the country. The athletes competed in alpine and cross country skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, speed skating, figure skating, and floor hockey.
This was the 10th Special Olympics World Winter Games. It united nearly 2,300 athletes from 112 countries in South Korea. More than 15,000 family, friends, volunteers, and spectators attended.

Elaine Barger, a resident at Windrows in Plainsboro, spoke during an event featuring a screening of the “Age of Champions,” a documentary featuring a 100-year-old tennis champion, an octogenarian pole vaulter, senior sprinters and swimmers, and grandmothers playing hoops. Barger, 75 and still an avid tennis player, shared some of her insights for active aging.
Producer Keith Ochwat talked about athletes as they defy the limitations of age in their quest for gold at the National Senior Olympics. Following the screening, Ochwat discussed health and wellness in the modern age and the resilience of the human spirit. Visit www.ageofchampions.org.
