Duke University: Daphne Ezer, a 2008 graduate of High School South, is one of 36 American students to be awarded the 2012 Marshall Scholarship for graduate studies in the United Kingdom. The scholarship will allow her to pursue a doctoral degree in genetics at Cambridge University.

A senior at Duke, Ezer is pursuing a double major in computer sciences and biology, and has been selected as the Duke Faculty Scholar (the highest award given by faculty to undergraduates). As an undergraduate, she has been involved in computational biology research at Duke Institute for Genome, Sciences, and Policy. She serves as the president of the Duke chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery and is co-president of the Biology Majors Union.

Ezer and her family lived in Plainsboro for 18 years before moving to Norfolk, Virginia, in 2008. She credits much of her success in college to the teachers she had in WW-P and the opportunities the schools gave her to pursue her interest in the science through the PRISM program in middle school, the Waksman genetic research club, and the Science Olympiad team in high school. Building on her experience at WW-P, Ezer helped to establish Science Olympiad teams at public schools in Durham, North Carolina.

Richard Goldfinger of West Windsor was honored by Beth El Synagogue on December 4 at its annual State of Israel Bonds breakfast.

Born in Newark and raised in Hillside, Goldfinger graduated from Seton Hall University and was a senior partner in the accounting firm of Goldfinger, Block, Glickenhaus, and Dinar for 50 years. He moved to West Windsor with his late wife, Thelma, 12 years ago.

Goldfinger, a member of Beth El Synagogue for 12 years, personally funds the maintenance and care of the synagogue’s grounds. He was honored for his commitment and support of the Jewish community and the State of Israel Bonds.

His son and daughter-in-law, Joel and Jacqueline Goldfinger, are also active members at Beth El. Joel is the treasurer and Jacqueline is in charge of publicity. His granddaughters, Laurel and Rachel, are also active in the synagogue.

The event raised more than $600,000 in Israel bond investments.
