Although multi-tasking is not taught in schools, and not everyone can master it, mothers all over the world do it. Supermom 2009 is an ode to that mother who juggles home, family, and work with dexterity and still retains her individuality and talent. The benefit event is on Saturday, October 3, at Cando Fitness, Forrestal Village, Plainsboro.
Mothers are encouraged to not only showcase their skills in a variety of activities ranging from fitness to general knowledge, but to also enjoy themselves with their peers, says Rashmi Das, a South Brunswick resident with two sons, ages 5 and 8. “The idea came to me as I realized that all the moms I knew juggle home, family, kid’s activities, and jobs with dexterity. Also, since the intent was to benefit a woman and a children’s organization, the ideal target was moms.”
Das left her corporate career selling outsourcing solutions last year to start her own small venture: to promote women-based enterprises including products and services from organizations that are run by women and looking for marketing and sales support globally. “The specific points that I look for in the organizations are that they should be helping a cause in some form and make hand crafted products using eco-friendly, recycled materials,” she says.
“Most of the moms who are helping me organize this fund raiser believe in making a difference to their lives and the lives around them in any small but significant way,” says Das. Her committee members include Amy Best, Sunitha Patel, Reshma Vishwanathan, Jody Sherlock, Bindu Tinnanur, Vijaya Tewari, Ganga Iyer, Sadhana Ambekar, Roopalee Khanna, Surbhi Kumra, Roopa Vasanth, and Kirsten Shearer.
Mothers with at least one child may choose from any of the fitness rounds including a 5K Fun Run, Fun Relay Race including changing diapers and running with a laundry bag, or hula hoops, before moving on to arts and crafts or performing arts. Family activities include music, martial arts and dance demonstrations, children’s games, and face painting. There is also a tricky tray auction and a fashion show. Participants receive a tote bag, shirt, and gifts. Register at www.woila.net or www.mysilsila.com.
The event is to benefit Women Aware, a non-profit organization to protect women from domestic violence in Middlesex County with a 24-hour helpline, crisis counseling, legal advocates, and an emergency shelter, and Ashraya, an organization in India that focuses on the care and rehabilitation of physically and mentally challenged children.
