The Rider University Art Gallery will present a 40-year survey of work by Bill Scott Sept. 28 through Oct. 29.
The exhibit includes still life and figure compositions made before Scott’s painting veered toward abstraction. His recent abstractions include references to garden and landscape imagery: flowers, foliage and tree branches.
An opening reception will be held Sept. 28 from 5 to 7 p.m. and artist’s talk will be held on Oct. from 5 at 7 p.m.
Raised in Haverford, Pennsylvania, Scott studied painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. After graduating from PAFA, he worked informally with abstract painter Joan Mitchell at her home in Vétheuil, France.
Since 1999, he has made intaglio prints with the C. R. Ettinger Studio. Scott has produced commissioned etchings for the Print Club of Cleveland as well as the Print Center and Fleisher Art Memorial in Philadelphia. In 2016, Philadelphia’s Cerulean Arts Gallery presented an exhibition of his intaglio prints.
Scott is represented by Hollis Taggart Galleries, New York, where he has had six solo exhibitions. He has had solo shows elsewhere in New York as well, and in London, Philadelphia and San Francisco, and has participated in numerous group exhibitions.
His work is in public collections at the Asheville Art Museum, North Carolina; British Museum; Cleveland Museum of Art; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; and Philadelphia Museum of Art, among others. He taught in the Certificate Program at PAFA, and in 2006 he received the institution’s Distinguished Alumni Award.
The Rider University Art Gallery is located in the Bart Luedeke Center on Rider University’s campus, 2038 Lawrenceville Road, in Lawrenceville. It is open Tuesday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. To learn more, visit rider.edu/arts.
