Lawrence Township is set to launch a new food waste recycling program.
Participants in the program will put their organic waste in a separate container that is picked up curbside and delivered to a compost facility in Maryland. The program aims to save space at local landfills and reduce municipal trash costs.
Along with food waste, participants can put other biodegradable material, such as paper products, pizza boxes and yard waste, in the container.
The township’s vendor, Central Jersey Waste, needs 300 participants to start the program. Those who sign up will be given a green organic waste container to be used for their weekly collection. The cost of the program is $17 per month.
Lawrence would be the second municipality in the county to launch such a food recycling program. More than 800 households in Princeton participate in an organic food waste recycling program.
Town recycling coordinator Greg Whitehead is set to lead an information session about the program. It is scheduled for 7 p.m. Jan. 29 at the Lawrence Branch of the Mercer County Library, 2751 Brunswick Pike.
