Lawrence High School will celebrate Black History Month with a celebration called “Making Sense of Black History: See it, Hear it, Taste it, Feel it!”on Friday, Feb. 20 from 6 to 9 p.m.
The event is being organized by Jametta Holloway, LHS history teacher and Gospel Choir director. The event starts in the hallways outside the LHS auditorium and moves throughout the school.
The “See it” portion of the event will include LHS student artwork and artwork from LHS art teacher Khalilah Sabree as well as student poster presentation displayed throughout the hallways as a testament to the rich history and culture of African-Americans.
The “Hear it” portion of the event will include performances by The Amazing Grace Little and the Grace Little Band and LHS student David Connelly and The Garvey School. It will also include students role playing biographical information and interesting facts about historical figures.
The “Taste it” portion of the evening will offer guests cultural foods with African, Creole, Caribbean and Soul flavors.
The “Feel it” portion of the evening will include poems, recitations, dance and a keynote speech by staff members, students and special guests. It will also include Trailblazer Awards given to honorees in recognition of their contributions to the Mercer County area. This year’s honorees are Thomas Harrington, Edith Savage-Jennings, Sean Spiller and Gwendolyn Joyce Tyler.
A Pride Grant awarded by the New Jersey Education Association helps fund this special event.
