Life Scout Grant Gallagher works his way through a narrow passage while caving in Pennsylvania.
Boy Scout Troop 28 in Lawrenceville went on a spelunking adventure in south central Pennsylvania this past month.
Scouts learned to traverse through pitches, squeezes and water hazards with only headlights as illumination within a maze of caves.
Volunteers from the Central New Jersey Grotto provided assistance during the trip. Volunteers helped the scouts “get lost” in the maze by having them loop through the horizontal cave that often intersected several common rooms, teaching the scouts the importance of orientating themselves in the cave by noting landmarks while moving through the grottos.
Troop 28 is open to boys who have completed fifth grade, and meets Friday nights from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the Robert Inglis Scout Cabin at Lawrence Road Presbyterian Church.
