Lawrenceville School junior, Tanmay Rao of Boy Scout troop 27 is one step closer to becoming an Eagle Scout.
In September, Rao delivered six picnic tables to Lawrence Community Center on Eggerts Crossing director Christine Lee. Rao completed the tables as part of is Eagle Scout community service project.
Rao led more than 20 youth and adult volunteers in building the tables. The group volunteered more than 200 hours to the construction.
The project was supported by a fundraiser at Colonial Lanes early this summer. Heath Lumber, a local lumber supplier, gave a discount on the materials used for construction.
Scoutmaster Mike Grzankowski, who served as one of Rao’s mentors, opened his home as a construction space for the tables. Eagle adviser Ted Camastra is also mentoring Rao.
Rao started scouting when he was six years old. He proposed his first project for LCC as a Cub Scout. Rao and his troop built bookshelves for the center’s reading room and organized a book drive to stock the shelves.
Rao said he was happy to working with LCC for his Eagle project. The center has nearly 82 students in its summer camp and Rao’s tables provide seating for outdoor activities.
Eagle Scout is the highest rank attainable in the Boy Scouts of America program. Requirements include earning at least 21 merit badges and demonstrating Scout Spirit through the Boy Scout Oath and Law, in community service and leadership. This includes an extensive service project that the scout plans, organizes, leads and manages.
