The Lawrence Historical Society will present its annual Mary Tanner Lecture on Thursday, Oct. 15, at 7 p.m. in the Lawrence High School auditorium.
The free program, titled “American Revolution 250 – Aaron Burr and the Hamilton Musical,” will be delivered by lecturer Rick Feingold. Pre-registration is requested.
Feingold will examine Aaron Burr’s life and reputation, comparing history to Broadway’s hit musical Hamilton. “Folks may know Burr as ‘the Villain’ from the hit musical,” the Historical Society noted. “But just how accurate is the portrayal?”
Using audio clips from the production, Feingold will contrast the musical’s characterization with Burr’s complicated role in early American politics. The lecture will also highlight Burr’s ties to Mercer County.
The Mary Tanner Lecture Series was created in 2003 to honor Tanner, a leading community organizer in Lawrence Township.
She helped rally support for the restoration of the 1761 Brearley House and was the first woman elected to Lawrence Township Council, serving from 1976 to 1981.
The lecture is part of the national “American Revolution 250” commemoration, leading up to the nation’s semiquincentennial in 2026.
