The Lawrence Township Public Schools has issued a statement regarding its commitment to supporting all students, regardless of immigration status, in light of potential changes to federal immigration policies that have raised concerns nationwide.
“Lawrence Township Public Schools will always be a haven for every student, regardless of their background or immigration status,” said Superintendent Robyn Klim in a joint statement with School Board President Michele Bowes and Jeanne Muzi, the district’s director of Student Achievement, Equity and Opportunity.
“Our commitment is to provide a safe, inclusive and supportive environment where everyone feels valued and protected,” they said, adding that this pledge is “more important than ever” in challenging times.
Addressing concerns about the possible impact of federal immigration enforcement, Klim, Bowes and Muzire assured families that the district upholds every child’s right to a public education. “Immigration status does not determine a student’s access to education in our district,” the statement says.
In response to these concerns, Klim has established a committee to proactively assess the potential effects of federal immigration policies on students.
“This committee is dedicated to protecting the stability and well-being of our students while developing a comprehensive plan to address these challenges with care and compassion,” she said.
According to the statement, the district is working closely with local officials and experts to provide support and resources for students and families. “We coordinate with Township Officials, the New Jersey Department of Education, and educational and legal experts to offer resources, training and guidance.”
The school leaders encouraged families to reach out if they need assistance. “We encourage you to contact your child’s principal or guidance counselor if you need assistance,” they said, inviting the community to unite in support of all students.
“Together, we will ensure Lawrence Township Public Schools remains a district that leads with equity, compassion and inclusion,” the three said.
