The Lawrence Library will be hosting the tenth annual TrashedArt Contest in April. The contest celebrates Earth Day by encouraging patrons to turn ordinary trash into extraordinary art.
The contest is limited to one entry per artist. Classes or groups may participate only if they register ahead of time by calling (609) 883-8292 or e-mailing jcuddahy@mcl.org.
The library will only accept artwork between Wednesday, March 20 and Wednesday, March 27. Selected artwork will be on display throughout the month of April. Students in grades 7-12 and adults who reside in Mercer County are eligible to participate.
Entries must be original artwork, no larger than 3′ by 3′ by 3′ and no heavier than 25 lbs. Any art medium is acceptable, so long as a minimum of 75 percent recycled content is used. The criteria for recycled materials is anything that has been manufactured and would have otherwise been thrown away. Some examples of recycled content include metals, paper, rubber, glass (but no sharp shards), plastic and cloth.
Non-recyclable materials such as glue, paint, tape, etc. are permitted. Suggestions include newspapers, fabric from old clothing, machine parts, and used building materials. For the purposes of this contest, natural materials such as rocks, dirt, bones and sticks are not considered recycled.
Contest entry forms are available at the Lawrence Library’s reference desk, as well as online. All accepted art entries will be publicly displayed at the library, located at 2751 Brunswick Pike, Lawrence.
Entries will be judged, and winners will be notified by phone or email. Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place in both adult and student categories. A reception will be held on Wednesday, April 17 at 7 p.m. to honor the winners and the participants.
