Washington Crossing Open Air Theatre is set to present Thoroughly Modern Millie and Snow White.
Thoroughly Modern Millie tells the story of Millie Dillmount, a young, vivacious Mid-Western girl who comes to the New York City to marry for money instead of love—a thoroughly modern thing for a woman to do in 1922. She meets and is attracted to poor, fun-loving Jimmy Smith but goes to work for pompous Mr. Trevor Graydon with every intention of marrying him. When not typing up a storm at the Sincere Trust Insurance Company, Millie befriends her fellow residents at a hotel for aspiring actresses.
The cast is filled with actors who have made area audiences applaud at the outdoor venue’s past five seasons.
Jill Palena plays the role of Millie Dillmount. Jill has been a staple at the Open Air Theatre for the past five summers; her past roles include Roxie Hart in Chicago, Lily St. Regis in Annie, Margie in Rodgers & Hammerstein’s State Fair and most recently was seen as Gertrude McFuzz in Seussical the Musical.
She is joined by Mike Nappi as Jimmy Smith. Nappi helped open the 2014 season when he starred as Tony in West Side Story and just finished a run as Pappy Yokum in Li’l Abner.
The cast also includes Jordan Brennan as Ching Ho, Lauren Brader as Mrs. Meers and Michael Lovett as Trevor Graydon. The production is directed by Open Air Theatre artistic director Louis Palena.
Performances of Thoroughly Modern Millie are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Aug. 22,-24, 29-31 and Sept. 5-7.
Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children age 12 and under.
The 2014 children’s theatre series is set to conclude with Snow White.
In this musical version of the tale, audiences meet Snow White, her sister Rose Red, a mysterious gypsy woman, seven silly little friends, a wicked queen and a prince.
Open Air Theatre co-artistic director, composer and lyricist Louis Palena has taken the classic story and created a new theatrical work that promises to delight audiences of any age. During previous seasons, audiences saw his versions of Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid and The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.
Performances of Snow White are scheduled for 11 a.m. Aug. 22, 23, 29 and 30; and 4 p.m. Aug. 24 and 31.
The Washington Crossing Open Air Theatre is located inside Washington Crossing State Park at 355 Washington Crossing-Pennington Road in Titusville.
