Three education-focused organizations in the area are uniting to bring the area the first ever Hopewell Valley Parenting Conference in January.
The Hopewell Valley Regional School District, Hopewell Valley Education Foundation and Hopewell Valley Municipal Alliance, with support from the Shepherd Foundation, are working together to come up with a series of workshops addressing common concerns for today’s parents. While the conference is still in the planning stage, proposed topics include technology, stress and anxiety, teen sexuality and child communication.
The keynote speaker will be Ken Ginsburg, a physician at Children’s Hospital of Pennsylvania and author of Raising Kids to Thrive and Building Resilience in Children and Teens. Ginsburg will be talking about what he calls lighthouse parenting — which he recommends as an alternative for helicopter parents,who hover over their children and struggle to give them their independence.
The conference is scheduled to take place on Saturday, Jan. 28 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Hopewell Valley Central High School. After the keynote speech, attendees will be able to choose two workshops out of 15 or so. Area support organizations will also have information tables at the conference.
The conference is open to all Hopewell Valley parents. The fee is $15 per person, $10 if registering before Dec. 16. For full registration information, email hvparentingconference@gmail.com.
