Hopewell Borough and the Hopewell Elementary School partnered to celebrate Arbor Day on April 26 at Hopewell Elementary School. Council President David Knights headlined the event and was joined by members of the borough Advisory Shade Tree Committee (ASTC), Hopewell Elementary Principal David Friedrich, kindergarteners and local certified tree expert and arborist Mike Shier.
The group planted two red maple trees on the school property near the Kinder-Garden. The children helped by shoveling dirt. A Q&A with Knights, Shier and ASTC members followed. After the ceremony, the ASTC also planted trees on the grounds of Borough Hall, Hopewell Park and two other street locations. Four of the six trees were acquired by donation: two from Hopewell Elementary and two from Borough residents. Mr. Shier’s company, Shier Tree Expert, donated the mulch to be spread around the six plantings.
Now in its ninth year of designation as a Tree City USA member, Hopewell Borough annually celebrates the Arbor Day holiday with new plantings.
