The Princeton Folk Music Society will present singer-songwriter Sloan Wainright on Friday, Jan 16 at Christ Congregation Church, 50 Walnut Lane, Princeton.
Wainwright, the youngest sister of singer-songwriter Loudon Wainwright II, is a relatively new voice on the folk circuit, but some say she has taken her place as a major figure on the contemporary folk music scene.
She is billed as a performer with a rich contralto voice and intensely personal lyrics that are forceful and uplifting. With her music, she aims casts a spell over her audience, drawing them in, as she explores childhood and the poetry of life. “We take our audience on a journey, we come in full tilt and do our show,” Wainwright says.
In concert Wainright performs both original melodies and covers from famous artists, such as Sly and the Family Stone, the Grateful Dead, and the Beatles. As part of her commitment to sustaining musical traditions, she teaches aspiring young musicians in the musical classrooms of summer song camps such as The Swannanoa Gathering, Summersongs, Wintersongs, WUMB Radio’s Summer Acoustic Music Week and Lamb’s Retreat.
A noted performer on the independent music scene long before it became hip to walk the road less traveled, Wainwright is said to be an artist whose passionate work and extraordinary life have fused to burn a new definition for women in music.
The Princeton Folk Music Society has encouraged the growth of folk music in central New Jersey for 40 years. It sponsors a monthly house sing for members on the first Friday of each month, and a monthly concert by visiting folk singers and songwriters, usually on the third Friday of each month.
Also scheduled to appear this year are Emma’s Revolution (Feb. 20), Mary Gauthier (March 20), Craig Bickhardt (April 17) and Mary Courtney (May 15).
