Dollar General Literacy Foundation recently awarded the Pennington Library $1,000 to support its literacy programs.
The library is set to use the grant to support its re-designed Children’s Summer Reading Club.
Kindergartners through fifth graders are eligible to sign up for the library’s Dig Into Reading book bundle reading challenge.
Themed book bundles are selected to help children develop vocabulary and comprehension required by the Common Core State Standards. Each book bundle includes a fiction and non-fiction title and an activity sheet with questions and prompts designed to encourage children to recall and reflect upon their reading.
Children turn in activity sheets to earn stickers, book prizes and an opportunity to attend an end of the summer Reader’s Party. The program runs from June 28-August 14 and families may sign up at the library.
Since its inception in 1993, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation has awarded more than $81 million in grants to nonprofit organizations, helping more than 4.7 million individuals take their first steps toward literacy or continued education.
