The name for Classic Sub Shop was chosen by election.
“We probably went through about five or 10 different names, and this is the one that we all decided on,” Vincent Hunter said.
Hunter owns the shop with his brother, Thomas, and a friend, Kevin Volner. When he describes the restaurant’s menu, it’s clear that they chose a suitable name.
Although the shop offers wraps and salads, the focus remains on the sandwiches, which are made with attention to freshness, Hunter said.
“We try keeping it simple,” Hunter said. “We want to be known for our sandwiches.”
Hunter said that the subs are made with mostly Thumann’s brand products.
Sandwiches are available on white or wheat rolls, and the restaurant also sells soup and sides such as macaroni salad, potato salad, pickles, chips and cookies.
Classic Sub Shop caters to local sports teams, schools and businesses. The restaurant offers 3-foot and 6-foot subs, as well as platters made of subs or wraps. They offer delivery for catering orders.
Hunter said that the shop’s catering services have become increasingly popular. He attributes this trend partly to the economic situation.
“It’s definitely a lot more affordable to use something like this as opposed to the more expensive catering kind of options,” Hunter said.
Classic Sub Shop will celebrate its fourth anniversary in December. Hunter said he got his start in this industry when he was about 15 years old, working at a hoagie store with his brothers. Now that they own a restaurant, it has remained a family effort.
“Everybody’s part of it in some way,” he said.
Hunter said the restaurant has recently added picnic tables where customers can sit to eat outside. They are also looking forward to other kinds of expansion. Hunter said that they hope to open another store within the next year or two.
Classic Sub Shop also has a growing presence online. The restaurant has a page on the social networking website, Facebook, which has attracted more than 450 fans. The shop’s website also offers coupons for customers.
Hunter said the business has found a niche in the Hamilton community as well.
“We definitely have a bunch of regulars and still, after four years, every day we get people trying us for the first time,” he said.
Hunter said that he and the staff appreciate the support of those in the community. When asked his favorite part of owning and working at Classic Sub Shop, Hunter spoke about the relationships he has developed with the customers.
“Probably having a couple hundred new friends, because all the customers who come in here, you get to know them, and a big part of me wants to think they come in here not only for our great food,” Hunter said.
