Mercer County Community College’s newspaper staff won 18 awards for work submitted to two competitions.
The College VOICE staff members won 13 awards in the New Jersey Collegiate Press Association competition and five awards in the Society of Professional Journalists Region I Mark of Excellence Awards.
MCCC students earned nine first-place awards and four second-place NJCPA Awards for work completed over the last year.
Stephen Harrison and Dan Povio won first place for News Writing. Harrison also won second place for Featuring Writing with fellow staff member Noelle Gilman.
Gillman earned first place for Investigative Writing with Kellie Rendina and Laura Pollack, who also won second in the category.
Kristie Kuschyk took home first place for Personality Profile.
In Column Writing, Ken Napier won first place and Miranda Horn won second.
Kevin Xavier received first place for Sports Writing.
Dakota Burr won second place for Artistic Story Illustration and tied with Matthew Grant Arnold for first place in Sports Photography.
The staff as a whole received first place for Editorial Writing.
MCCC students also placed in the SPJ Region I Mark of Excellence Awards, which includes students in two and four-year colleges in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast.
Matthew Grant Arnold earned first place for General News Photography.
Ken Napier won second place for Column Writing.
Laura Pollack won second place for In-Depth Reporting and third place in the same category with fellow reporters Kellie Rendina and Noelle Gilman.
The staff received third place for Editorial Writing.
Eight of the recipients are New Media majors. Currently in its second year, the New Media program has more than 40 students pursuing the major at the college.
