The New Jersey State Button Society will be celebrating National Button Week at the Lawrence Headquarters Branch of the Mercer County Library System at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 19, 2016.
Theresa Doelger Kuser (daughter of a German brewer) was the wife of Fred Kuser (son of Swiss immigrants). Victorian women (she died in 1929) often wore buttons that depicted their hobbies and interests. She had six daughters and four sons. Buttons to be shown were made before or during her lifetime, and their subjects have a connection with her life or her home, Kuser Farm Mansion.
The New Jersey State Button Society (NJSBS) is set to celebrate National Button Week and its 75th anniversary with Local History as Told by Buttons Saturday, March 19, 2016. The talk will begin at 2 p.m. at the Lawrence Branch of the Mercer County Library located at 2751 Brunswick Pike in Lawrenceville.
Participants cane learn about Mercer County history, as told by buttons worn by women at the turn of the century. Barbara Figge Fox and members of the New Jersey State Button Society will show buttons that might have appealed to Theresa Doelger Kuser, Victorian matriarch of the Kuser Farm Mansion. The span of her lifetime -1862 to 1926- was the heyday of beautiful buttons made for women to wear. Attendees will see picture buttons made of metal, black glass mourning buttons and shell buttons inlaid with gold and silver. The library will also host an exhibit of buttons throughout the month of March that will tell the stories behind Kuser Farm Mansion and show the history of the New Jersey State Button Society.
Registration is suggested. Call (609) 989-6920 or email lawprogs@mcl.org for more information.
