Hamilton Township Council prepares to move forward with a critical expansion of its animal shelter to address additional capacity needs at a meeting scheduled for Feb. 4.
A resolution to award a competitive bid to Newport Construction, for the construction a new building for the township’s animal shelter, which once completed will be used along with the existing shelter building. The additional building will not only provide the overall facility with critically needed capacity, but was a less expensive alternative when compared to the cost of constructing of one, larger new building.
The original township shelter building was constructed in 1971, with an addition to the existing building taking place in 1989.
The overall expansion of the facilities will nearly double the shelter’s dog kennels (from 20 kennels to 36 kennels), double the size of its areas to accommodate cats (from 25 cat rooms to 50 cat rooms), provide a larger animal medical area and private quarantine areas for both dogs and cats, as well as include two, additional adoption rooms and a needed grooming area for animals.
Pending council approve, construction of the additional shelter space could start as early as the spring, with completion likely by the end of 2014.
