Hamilton Township Fire District No. 2 received an Assistance to Firefighters Grant for $134,120 for turnout gear.
The grant will provide fireproof jackets, pants, boots and helmets for the district, which is one of nine fire districts that provide emergency fire protection to residents of Hamilton Township.
District No. 2 is governed by five commissioners that employ 18 career firefighters. The district is partnered with the Mercerville Fire Company, located at Five Points in the Mercerville section of the township, and has a supplement of over 25 volunteers.
All career staff members are trained as Emergency Medical Technicians and provide medical assistance in addition to emergency fire protection to the community. The career staff are also New Jersey licensed Fire Inspectors and inspect more than 700 businesses within the district annually.
Funding comes through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters Grants Operations and Safety Grant Program. It is administered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency in cooperation with the U.S. Fire Administration.
The purpose of AFG is to award grants directly to fire departments and non-affiliated Emergency Medical Services organizations to protect both the health and safety of the public, and first-responder personnel as well.
