In support of the American Hiking Society’s National Trails Day on June 6, the Mercer County Park Commission will be hosting a free, family-friendly scavenger hunt at the Tulpehaking Nature Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The nature center is located at 157 Westcott Avenue in Hamilton.
National Trails Day is a celebration of the outdoors held the first Saturday in June. The event encourages residents to get outside and appreciate the often overlooked trails in their community.
The National Trails Day scavenger hunt at Roebling Park will start every 15 minutes. Each child will be armed with their own Explorer Kit with all the material needed during the hunt including a map. As families make their way along the marked trail, they will come across County Naturalist staff and volunteers at stations that engage participants in various nature themed-activities. The scavenger hunt ends back at the Tulpehaking Nature Center and takes about 90 minutes to complete. This activity is free and geared toward families with elementary school aged children.
The Tulpehaking Nature Center provides programs and exhibits that encourage visitors to explore and discover the many cultural, historic and natural resources of the Abbott Marshlands. It is owned by the County of Mercer and operated by the Mercer County Park Commission. During the summer and through September 13, 2015, the nature center is open Saturdays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. and Mondays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information about the nature center, programs and schedule of events, go to mercercountyparks.org.
